TATE SHIMAO

HOMETOWN: HONOLULU, HAWAII

OCCUPATION: HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE

IG: @TATE.13

My name is Tate Shimao. I was born and raised in Hawaii until this past year when I moved to California to train and play baseball. I just turned 18 years old and play and am planning on attending the University of Southern California next fall.

In my free time, I like to go to the beach and improve my performance during my training sessions. The most important thing in my life is my family! Two major goals of mine are to be able to provide for them and become a professional player. I'd also like to put myself in a position to give back to the youth in Hawaii!

Q&A WITH TATE

Q: What's a book you read that made an impact on you?

TATE: Relentless by Tim Grover, who was Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant’s trainer. He talks about their work ethic and mindset. Something that impacted me was what he described as a "cleaner", which is never being satisfied, always setting new goals when reaching your personal best. Not stopping at good, or great, but fighting until you are unstoppable.

Q: Name one thing everyone should experience at least once?

TATE: I think everyone should experience being outside of their comfort zone. For me, that was moving to the mainland from Hawaii and living on my own. I feel that being out of your comfort zone helps you to grow as a person, and being able to adapt to new situations is important.

Q: What is your favorite song?

TATE: A song I never get tired of listening to is Hawaiian Pakalolo. It gets me hyped up before my games, and I like to listen to it when I’m driving home after my workout.

Q: What's your favorite way to train at Legends? Why?

TATE: My favorite way to train at Legends is on the treadmills. It’s a good challenge and helps to improve my speed. Whenever we do treads my legs are dead and I’m drenched with sweat, which I like.

Q: What’s one thing you have to do to prepare on game day?

TATE: On game day, I like to listen to music on the drive to the game because it helps me stay loose.

Q: What do you do post-training to enhance your performance?

After training, I like to use the Hypervolt massage guns and Normatec to help my body feel fresh. Then I drink my protein drink and stretch so my body is ready for the next day to workout hard again.
